What Is Clinical Depression ( Major Depression)?

The term clinical depression is used to describe depression that is not caused by a loss, such as the death of a loved one or a medical condition.

It is also known as major depression.

Clinical depression is a period of sadness, irritability, or low motivation that occurs with other symptoms, lasts at least two weeks in a row, and is severe enough to negatively affect one’s life.

Who Does It Affect?

Major depression can sometimes occur from one generation to the next in families, but often it may affect people with no family history of the illness.
Women are twice as likely as men to have this condition at some point in their lives.

How Many Times Can You Be Clinically Depressed?

Individuals can have it once in their lifetime or it can occur several times in one’s life.

What Are The Symptoms Of Clinical Depression?

People experience depression in different ways. Some people only have a few symptoms, while others have many. Some symptoms might get better over time while others may get worse.

Symptoms can affect your emotional and physical health as well as your appetite.

  • Feeling tired or loss of energy almost every day
  • A sense of worthlessness or guilt almost every day
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Indecisiveness- difficulty making and sticking to decisions
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping) almost every day
  • Reduced interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day
  • Restlessness or feeling slowed down
  • Repeated thoughts of death or suicide
  • Weight loss or gain (a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month)

It is wrong to dismiss depression as being trivial and not a genuine health condition, it is a real illness with real symptoms.

Depression is not a sign of weakness or something you can “snap out of” by “pulling yourself together”.

If you are suffering from depression, is important to seek help as quickly as possible.
The sooner you see a doctor, the sooner you can be on the way to recovery. Symptoms, even if severe, usually improve with psychological counselling, antidepressant medications or a combination of the two.
With the right treatment and support, most people with depression can make a full recovery.
