National Women’s History Month – CBT Kenya

This is the month where we revel in learning about all manner of female history-makers, from the big names to the unsung heroes. It’s also a time when we focus on learning more about the female perspective on big movements in human history.

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987. Women’s History Month 2022 will take place from Tuesday, March 1-Thursday, March 31, 2022. The 2022 theme is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” This theme is “both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.”

Why women’s History Month is so important

  • Women’s History Month allows people to become more aware of these current issues. This celebration used to be just one day and then only a week, but now it is a full month. This progression also shows the progression and great strides women have made to be where we are today.
  • People can participate during this time in multiple ways: attending women’s marches, supporting woman-owned businesses or organizations, educating yourself on current problems, or simply watching movies or tv shows directed by women.
  • Know a woman’s name. Know her history. Know what she did, how she did it, and why she did it. That kind of intellectual legacy is immensely powerful and seriously feminist, because it makes her more than just her gender, or a side note in a male collection of Great Ideas. Shining a light on women’s contributions to the annals of human history makes us equal humans, equally worthy of being remembered for our deeds.
  • Young girls are still being told that they cannot do certain things or pursue certain career fields because they are for men. Women’s History Month lets them see that they can do and pursue whatever they want because there are women out there who paved the way for them. It is so important for young girls to have female role models to look up to because it teaches them that if their role models can do it, so can they.

Review

We’ve all been the victims of the limited imaginations of other people. Whether it was a teacher who didn’t expect much of you, a friend who laughed at your dreams, or anyone else who failed to take you seriously. However, we’ve also had people who cheered us on, picked us up when we were down, and encouraged us to keep going. It’s important to always try to be that person for the women around you.

Women are often clumped together by society and labeled with characteristics, jobs, and hobbies that are deemed acceptable for us to have. The reality is that we’re all extremely different in the best ways. We all come from different places and backgrounds, and we all have different things we’re good at and passionate about. The key is to always check yourself and make sure you’re supporting women who have goals that may not match your own. You don’t have to understand exactly what they’re doing if you’re not interested in it, but you should definitely support it.

Word from CBT Kenya

In order for women to believe that they can change the world, they need to see themselves represented in roles of power and influence, both in contemporary times and over the course of history. That’s why Women’s History month is so vital to women’s education. It is a month dedicated to telling the powerful stories of women, and this year especially is seeing a heavy emphasis on promoting the influential actions of otherwise lesser-known women.

Women’s History Month is a time to learn from the women who came before us and to spread awareness of all that women have contributed to society. It is a month to deliberately share the stories of brave women. CBT Kenya wishes you a happy Women’s History Month celebration to all of you, not just this month, but always.
