It is important to understand that any individual is affected by family dynamics hence the need for family counseling. Family therapy involves sessions with psychologists and family members including parents, children, siblings, as well as extended family members such as grandparents, aunts and uncles. Different counseling sessions will have different family members coming in depending on the issues being addressed.
Family counseling is based on the premise that each person in the family is impacted by others. Counseling and therapy is meant to help family members to resolve issues, transition through major life changes such as divorce, or address issues of addiction among some members of the family. As mental health professionals who understand the dynamics involved in family relations, our goal is to encourage more families to seek counseling together.
We feel that family counseling, especially in Africa, is only an extension of our existing collectivism. We always come together to help each other and find solutions to existing problems. When done in a professional setting, therapy allows for families to improve their communication, understand each other and set on a path to resolve issues in a healthy way.
